in another lifetime
we were all pizzas
i was cheese pizza, plain and neutral
you were pineapple and ham, controversial
we sat together in that orange lighting
the one that made us look more appetizing than we really were
that kept us nice and toasty
we talked about everything: the meaning of life, team edward or team jacob, how many pizza children we wanted to have
we looked out of that glass window
and imagined the life we would have together if we were humans
we edged closer and closer to each other
until we were touching
and you whispered sweet nothings
“one day i will get you out of this orange heat”
you always promised me
you pressed into me, melting me
our cheese becoming one, unable to separate
but we all get stale at some point
and you left without a second thought
the moment i became cold
and i was alone in that pool of grease
the fibers of cardboard beneath me scraping, leaving me with bruises where you once pressed into me
i didn’t realize then —
you weren’t made of real cheese, not able to truly melt
and when we would stick
you would always take from me
leaving me with less and less
filling yourself to be more and more
until i was nothing
and you were everything
until i wasn’t appetizing, even in that orange lighting
and you were glistening
until i saw the dusty grey of the trash bag
and your promise was finally fulfilled.
