We sat a place for you,
(and you and you…)
We sat a place,
we dressed in our finest
and left the empty hangers, laden
with heavy sequined-jackets
in you case you wanted
to wear one out.
We asked the waiter for
all the specials, please
there’s no rush,
we danced with strangers
till half past three…
the seating too early,
the party too late,
Time out of context
picks up his oxfords,
goes out on the ballroom
and shines;
the record spins Disaster,
the ball drops even faster,
each year I wonder
where you’ve all gone…
as we keep the lights on.
