In union square park
a man is standing against a fence

he has a bluetooth on his ear
but you’re pretty sure he isn’t
talking on the phone

you can tell he’s talking
to something else
something deep
calling that thing a liar
so many times it’s an echo
describing the way it eats the faces
of those it loves and lies to and kills

there’s some small
needly twitching
in the corner of your left eye

you think about water –
the drain in your bathroom sink
is clogged
and the water just sits there
after you brush your teeth
toothpaste foam floating

you think about your breath
and your body how your body
is sitting here
noticing
it’s so effortless
this sitting here
but not the noticing
it’s not effortless
you can’t notice anything
without lying
