Alexa Torres Skillicorn is a Latinx jazz violinist, music ethnographer, and composer. She is currently a PhD fellow in Music Performance and Composition (jazz) at NYU. Her writing can be found in peer-reviewed publications like the Journal of Latin American Studies and the Journal of Research in Music Education. Heralded as "infectious from the get-go" by All About Jazz, Torres's debut album as a bandleader In Situ, can be heard on all major streaming platforms. It was featured on international airwaves like NPR and major music media platforms like Strings Magazine. New compositions from her forthcoming album explore intersections between music and poetry. Torres holds an MM in Jazz Violin Performance from the University of North Texas and a BA in Anthropology, Latin American Studies, and Plan II Honors from University of Texas, Austin. Torres's music and ethnographic research and writing has been recognized by competitive awards and grants such as the Fulbright Grant, The Steinhardt Fellowship, The Presser Graduate Music Award, and the Austin Live Music Grant.
