The journal welcomes unsolicited flash, poetry, and fiction submissions by both emerging and established authors. We admire all forms of transgressive, absurdist, and minimalist literature. To get an idea of what kind of work we like, please see the various pieces we have published in the past. We do not believe in silent rejections. We respond to all submissions. We do our best to respond within about four weeks (often sooner), but please don’t query the moment that window passes. We promise we’re reading.
Rights:
Maudlin House acquires first publication rights, but you, the writer, still own your work. This means we hold publication rights for 30 days after your piece has been published. After that, you are free to publish and submit your work elsewhere. We kindly ask for acknowledgment in any subsequent reprints of your work.
Payment:
Gratitude and admiration for now.
General Guidelines:
WE DO NOT ACCEPT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORK. Any work that has been posted or otherwise made publicly available online is considered “previously published.” This includes blogs and social media sites.
We do, however, accept simultaneous submissions. We encourage them and wish you luck in getting your work published. Just be sure to immediately notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
Multiple Submissions:
Please submit only one piece at a time unless we explicitly ask to see more work. Once you receive a response, wait a few weeks before sending something new. We want to make sure everyone gets a fair chance to be read. There are only so many hours, so much caffeine, and so much emotional bandwidth available to us.
